Superstar scratch DJ, Kid Koala (aka Eric San) will drop his fourth album, 12 Bit Blues on September 17 via Ninja Tune.12 Bit Blues is a self-described “blues turntable” record, with Koala using a E-mu SP-1200 sampler (he had coveted since childhood) to record each track over a three day period. Made without sequencing software, Koala stripped and chopped the music with the pads on the machine and a multi-track recorder. The resulting album is described as “really raw, immediate and strangely beautiful.”
The Canadian DJ explains the inspiration behind the project, “Being a DJ and a record collector, I started drawing all of these lines backwards from the music I was into as a teenager and was like, ‘Wow, all of this stuff correlates to the blues’ and I got really heavy into it. So much so that I decided to do an actual turntable blues record, whatever that means.”
