Previous Drum & Bass producer Eddy Woo turned his musical efforts to a different genre after finding his true sound in Dubstep. The producer of the deep talks to Pulse ahead of upcoming show for Licked Beatz at London's Cable Nightclub, tonight March 30th.
Seven, thanks for talking to us! A name on the Dubstep scene for many years now but for those that don’t know, how would you describe your sound? My sound is a universal mixture of dark minimal groove based rollers and techie smashers, with a slight B-Boy element to my beats. I try to achieve a dark cinematic feel to my music too, while retaining a dance-floor edge people could really get down to. i try to incorporate theme and good structure as well. but above all, its not just a collection of noises. In all of my productions, i have tried to be as versatile as possible, never really replicating my last tune and always trying something new, whilst retaining my signature sound to my works.
I like to make music i think people will enjoy listening to past a certain era and not just during a musical trend or phase within a scene.
You were previously Drum & Bass producer Eddy Woo with releases on labels such as High Lite and RAM Records sister label, Frequency back in 2005/6. Why did you make the move from Drum & Bass to Dubstep? I had a drum n bass career spanning over 5 years and 15 releases on some prestigious labels. Even though I was quite well established i never felt like i found my true sound, but when i started experimenting with dubstep, my SEV3N sound just seemed to come naturally and fell into place for me. The tempo of dubstep allowed me to write the kind of grooves that i found hard to fit into the drum n bass, which opened up a whole new avenue for me that i wanted to express my self through musically.
How does Seven work in the studio? Logic? Fruity Loops? Ableton? What are your favourite pieces of kit and why? I use logic pro studio 9. A moog analogue synth and a virus ti. Fav piece of kit is UAD2. Its changed my life and its the best thing i ever bought for my studio. I highly recommend it to everybody.
You’re playing Licked Beatz at London’s Cable nightclub tonight, March 30th. Tell us what we can expect from a Seven DJ set. Well, I have had lots of brand new tunes sent to me this week from big artists and I'm ready to drop some world exclusives on the night. As well as my whole album through the set too. I know DJ Madd is dropping some bombs right now too from what i heard in previous sets of his recently. It's a 90 minute set too! Licked beatz is a night not to be missed!
What are your top 5 tunes of the moment getting regular play in your sets? I don't really have a top 5. i love all the tracks i play so much. Just to narrow down all the tunes i get sent into a 26 track set is a mission in its self, as well as all my own tunes. Sometimes i just don't have time to play even half of the ones i would like to. So i have a top 26 really, rather than a top 5.
Your upcoming album, Evolution is set for release soon, what can we expect from this project? People can expect each tune to be individual, but with my signature stamped all over them. I haven't tried to steer away from what i am known for, instead i just pushed my self even harder to make better music. I have tried to accommodate everyones tastes though. Be it deep and minimal, to dance floor smashers. It's a definitive collection of my music and i feel i put my heart and soul into every track. My single releases vary so much from track to track. It was a task to try and incorporate all of what i think people are expecting from it into just 12 or maybe 13 tracks. I have included some vocals tracks on there too. Vocals by Alys B on both tracks compliment the album perfectly.
I tried to make the album accessible to all. Something DJs can play and also something people can listen to on their ipods. If you sit back, with headphones on and shut your eyes, each track has the potential to then take you on a musical journey in the mind.
What does the rest of 2012 hold in store for Seven? Touring. Album 2 production and more touring. At some point i'm hoping to collab with N Type and Youngsta again soon. Its been a while since we got in the studio. There is talk of collaborations with other artists too. but i wont say too much about that right now.
