Helen S, London - United Kingdom - on 27/10/11
SECOND DATE is Henry Birkbeck, a 24-year-old London-based producer who generally operates at the slower end of the dance register. Having lived in New York and Paris while growing up, he draws influence from a range of sources on both sides of the Atlantic. He's remixed the likes of DJ Cam, Black Strobe, The Magician and Thieves Like Us and SECOND DATE's discography is moving from strength to strength with his Young Beautiful track featured on the new Hotel Costes compilation. An up and coming talent to keep a close eye on, he's delivered us an exclusive mix as Helen S asked him (being the expert) for his ideal first, second and third date tracks- and any for advice he can give to us novices along the way...
FIRST DATE: PNAU - Baby (Breakbot Remix)
In my opinion, a first date should be fun and light-hearted. To be honest, any Breakbot song will do; he's a fun, accessible producer, and he's got a great ear for melody. Piano, Rhodes, slap bass - no holds barred. Enough influences from the greats to remind anyone of their parents' record collection, and the Ed Banger nametag means he's a safe bet for the more trend-conscious ladies. He once described his music as "cheesy", but its just the right amount as far as I'm concerned.
SECOND DATE: Jacques Greene - Another Girl
If there's a second date, then the first one went well (and/or a lot of money was spent on someone). Time to take things up a notch, without it getting too intense. I've been seriously into everything Jacques Greene touches for the past few months; he's treading the line between house and 2-step really well, and always puts samples to great use. Another Girl is easily my favourite of his songs so far, with its Juno synth washes, catchy sample loops and bouncy faux-garage beat. Guaranteed to put you in a good mood.
THIRD DATE: The Weeknd - The Morning
Call me old-fashioned, but "third time lucky" is a good strategy for date number 3. Three dates in you can let the mood take over a bit more, and who better than the Weeknd to help up your game? House of Balloons has been my favourite album (well, mixtape) of 2011 by a long shot, and The Morning is a deal-sealer. It opens with a guitar solo, builds slowly until the beat kicks in, and by the time it does it's anybody's guess what's going to happen. I'd leave this one on repeat for a while...
