Helen S, London - United Kingdom - on 30/9/11
As a duo, Instra:mental have been making a serious impact on the UK D&B and Bass music scene for the last few years. Individually known as artists Boddika and Jon Convex, the pair have worked with the likes of Skream, D-Bridge, Jonny L and Burial and have helped the bass scene as a whole move forward and forge new paths. Before their headline gig tonight at the launch of FOUND, a series of 13 nights designed to celebrate UK & London bass music, Jon Convex caught up with Pulse.
Pulse: 2011 has been a very busy year for you guys, together and separately. Do you think the pro-longed exploration of Boddika & Jon Convex as solo artists will alter the sound of Instra:mental? Instra:mental: With our solo works I think you really get what makes up Instra:mental, If you combine Convex and Boddika you will always get that Instra:mental sound
When playing sets out together do you prefer to keep it separate from your alias or can we expect to hear some Boddika & Jon C at the FOUND launch tonight? Jon Convex and Boddika are Instra:mental so you will hear lots of new material from our solo works
All the recent 170bmp tunes you've been releasing were actually produced a long time ago and you haven't been producing any for over a year. Has there been a natural progression away from producing 170bpm or do you think you might return to making it again? We haven't worked as Instra:mental in over a year, the 170 material has been possibly closer to two years now. I (Jon Convex) will be exploring 170 again when the time is right. Myself, dBridge, Consequence and Joe Seven put out a 12" under the Binary Collective which was a 170 half tempo workout.
What tune have you got on repeat at the moment? As for records Im playing in my sets, the New Mosca EP on 3024 is doing it for me right now. Outside of what I play, the latest Bon Iver album is amazing- the structure, everything. Also the Sbtrkt Album was very nice.
Have you seen anyone on the FOUND series lineup that you think is making waves at the moment?
It's a serious lineup! but I try not to watch what other people are doing these days, The only people I follow are the ones I work closely with. Though as I said, really enjoying the new Mosca EP.
What's been the seminal point in Instra:mental's timeline for you? There's been a few great points, winning 2 DJ awards on the trot was nice, also putting together the Fabric Live CD, and obviously releasing our debut LP, which was a long affair.
With increasing attention directed towards Boddika & Jon Convex, what does the future hold for Instra:mental? I like to see Instra:mental as a chapter and our solo works are the next step. It took us a long time to be happy with what we wrote as Instra and it got to the point where we both needed to do our own things to be truly happy with what we are now creating. I'm still exploring the possibilities with working solo and having that freedom. I think you will hear the Convex sound change over the next year or two while I fine tune my productions.
FOUND launches tonight, September 30th, at Hidden, 100 Tinworth Street, London.
