There is not a word more synonymous and representative of club and dance music culture as Ibiza. One of the major components in the evolutionary history of electronic music, the hedonistic island is home to the biggest and best nightclubs in the world. Amongst these, none is more integrated and reputable than Club Amnesia. Originally entitled The Workshop of Forgetfulness, Amnesia perfectly encapsulates the essence and spirit of Ibiza; a place away from the constraints and burdens of everyday life, a place of uninhibited freedom and experience. A resident at Amnesia for over ten years, no-one understands this better than Spanish DJ and producer Martin Vega, known to the world as Mar-T.
Mar-T's extended love affair with Ibiza and Amnesia began in 1998. Arriving to the island as a young and up and coming DJ, he was keen to make as early and as memorable an impression as he possibly could. Playing at smaller, more low-key parties to begin with, his considerable talents behind the decks were soon noticed and he was offered a regular, summer residency at Ibiza's most famous superclub. Reflecting back on when he first arrived however, he remembers that, though keen to get himself known on the scene, Ibiza, musically and spiritually, was not at its most inspiring;
“it was an island controlled by English promoters, (promoting) commercial house and trance music and nothing from the past real Ibiza going. Now things have changed, there are promoters from all around the world and you can choose the soundtrack of your holidays. House, trance, underground...You choose, you decide!”
Ignoring the increasingly business-driven tourist trade taking over the island, Mar-T set about dedicating every waking minute to the development and improvement of his DJ sets. Never once compromising on quality, the young DJ soon became a staple of the Ibiza clubbing experience, over the years adapting his style and tastes to suit the new wave of true, passionate musicians that were once again infiltrating and making the island their own. Mar-T's extended warm-up and warm-down sets, like those of DJ Alfredo before him, have become legendary, consistently proving himself year in year out to be one of Ibiza's most versatile and fluid mixers.
“It has given me everything, without Amnesia I would not be an international DJ as at the beginning I was only a DJ, (with) no productions and Amnesia gave me the opportunity to learn and to grow.”
Indeed by 2004, Mar-T was beginning to extend his repertoire to the rest of the world, spending most of the year touring internationally, whilst returning every summer to continue his residency. As the digital age took over and the scene shifted its focus from DJ's to producers, so Mar-T felt it was time to attach a fresh and exciting string to his bow. After several releases on minor labels, he felt it was time to cut out the middle man and set up his own label; enter Wow! Recordings;
“I just did not have many opportunities in other labels and I decided to do my own thing...It's my label where I release all the material I think is good, nothing more. Just my way of expressing myself.”
From Dose3's 'Mind' EP back in 2006, Wow! has quickly established itself as one of the most promising and exciting labels to emerge in recent years. Focusing on the tougher, dancefloor orientated side of house music, the label has released records from the likes of King Roc, Martinez and Betoko. Latest release 'Laughing Gas', a collaboration between Betoko and Mar-T himself, has garnered support from an international array of DJ's and clubbers alike. With the growing success of the label, 2010 is to prove a critical year in Mar-T's career, a fact he is very much aware of;
“2010 is going to be a tough year for me because I will take control again of 'People from Ibiza' parties at Amnesia and I want to release many tracks before the summer. I need more time!”
Providing he manages to stay on top of things, 2010 could be the year that Mar-T becomes a true household name. And yet, one gets the impression that whatever his success, Mar-T will never lose touch with his spiritual home, of the island and the club that taught him to respect, enjoy and cherish electronic music in the way that nowhere else on earth ever could;
“There is no place similar to Ibiza. I've been travelling all around the world and trust me; nothing can compare.”
